Accommodation naming conventions
We have been asked why does Kings say it is Ohakune accommodation rather than listing just under
the heading of Ohakune hotels, Ohakune motels, Ohakune lodges or even Ohakune backpackers?
Kings is difficult to label as the definition of a Hotel is: A house for entertaining strangers or
travellers; an inn or public house, of the better class. With it's facilities and refurbished en-suite
rooms and shared facility rooms Kings can certainly be called an Ohakune Hotel or being placed
under the list of Ohakune Hotels.
While the definition of a Motel is: An establishment that provides lodging for motorists in rooms
usually having direct access to an open parking area. Also called motor court, motor lodge. The car
park to the en-suite rooms is right next to the rooms so we are happy to define the accommodation
as an Ohakune Motel or list it under Ohakune Motels.
However as skiing and snowboarding is a core part of why Ohakune and Kings exists the definition of
a Lodge is important: A hotel providing overnight lodging for travellers or a (rustic) house used as a
temporary shelter ie a Ohakune Ski Lodge. With the buildings wooden architecture and ambient character
Kings can easily be seen as an Ohakune Lodge or come under the listing of Ohakune Lodges.
Then with it's refurbished shared facility rooms Kings can also come under the Ohakune budget
accommodation banner however the meaning of backpackers is: hostels or budget accommodation.
The old poor quality version of a backpackers is nolonger valid, expectation is now is of clean and
comfortable rooms, so Kings with its fresh, refurbished, clean, comfortable and value for money rooms,
can also be easily described as an Ohakune Backpackers, or an Ohakune Hostel or come under
Ohakune Budget Accommodation.
Kings even has a private house at the rear, so can also come under the listing of Ohakune house or
Ohakune houses to let. Kings has something for everyone, so that is why in most cases Kings is
labelled with the generic term Ohakune Accommodation.
Transportation to Turoa/Whakapapa
The Turoa mountain road from Ohakune is 17kms and the Bruce road from Whakapapa village it is 6kms.
The access roads to both of the ski areas are by far the best in New Zealand. They're fully sealed, two lanes
and suitable for most vehicles.
We are talking snow so obviously there are changeable weather conditions. This mean that the road can be
restricted to vehicles with chains or 4WD. So you will need to bring your own chains, hire on way up the
mountain (hire and fitting service is run, $30 at Turoa $25 at Whakapapa) or wait until it opens
for normal vehicles.
There is plenty of free parking and a free carpark shuttle service will take you from lower carparks to
the base of the ski area.
We can also arrange for a shuttle service from Kings up to Turoa or Whakapapa. PLease see reception
to arrange.
For road conditions and mountain snow weather update visit the Kings Café where every morning
we post the latest bulletin.
We suggest you use modern equipment
Ski and snowboard equipment has dramatically changed over the past 10 years. Now skis and snowboards
are lightweight, flexible, with new shapes to make it easier to turn and importantly their binding
systems are much safer.
With changing technology renting new equipment is affordable and will make your time on the mountain
much more fun and learning will be easier. Ask the receptionist if you need to hire equipment
Get a lesson
If you are new to the snow or have had a break or just need to improve, the best way to learn to ski or
board is from a professional instructor. Many people are great on the snow but can they teach?
Mt Ruapehu ski and snowboard instructors are all fully trained and qualified to teach you the skills needed
at the right pace. They'll build your confidence and skills.
If you are new but don't want a lesson then start on the smaller slopes and build your way up at your
own pace. You must be able to control your speed and direction at all times and the best way to
learn is by starting small.
